First Santa Claus…

12 Oct

Philadelphia sports fans have (rightly) earned a reputation as among the worst in the world. Forty years ago, in an incident they’ll never live down, they pelted Santa Claus with snowballs. In the early 80s, one of the few bright spots in the city’s troubled sports history, future Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt got booed for striking out… on a day in which he hit a record-tying four home runs. More recently, black athletes like Allen Iverson and Donovan McNabb have found a racial subtext in their treatment by the fans. While the “they’re not racist, they hate everyone” defense is certainly plausible here, it’s still hard to look at an angry white mob booing a black man in a city with a history of, um, some difficulties.

All around good corporate citizen Comcast, which owns the Philadelphia Flyers, decided to have a perfectly innocent event kickoff to the season: having renowned hockey mom Sarah Palin drop the ceremonial first puck. What could possibly go wrong?

Bonus points for the fans around 1:10 into the video waving the Obama-Biden signs.
